Neil Elwell- "I am a Spokane native and probably got my musical genes from both my dad, who played guitar, and my mom who played violin. My interest in the guitar carried from childhood musical toys until my 1st real guitar in 63 or 64. In Libby jr. high I was relegated to the tuba and under the direction of acoustic bassist Noel Waters (of the Arnie Carruthers groups) started my musical journey. In addition to marching band at Ferris high school, numerous garage bands and kids dance bands were the way most weekends were spent. At some point in the early 70's I quit playing in front of people until the mid 80's. In '87 I took over a blues radio program at the local public radio station KPBX, and produced that show for 7 years. During those years many attempts at getting back into music were met with varying degrees of success. `Bluesosaurus' and `The Smokestack blues band' were two of the more satisfying examples. I also met Dave Turner while working in Lindell Reason's group, and the seed of Laffin' Bones was planted then. The 'Bones commenced in late '94 and has grown musically into a close family of like-thinking players of today. My influences are varied and many, as I love all types of "real" music. Some of these include Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Nelson, Django, Weather Report, Miles Davis, Jerry Garcia, Robert Cray, Howlin' Wolf, Rolling Stones, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Duane Allman, Bonnie Raitt, Coco Montoya, all of the Kings, There is just so many that have affected me it is hard to list them all. I also play acoustic guitar and dobro in The Doghouse Boyz and the Crawdaddies, both acoustic blues bands. The Crawdaddies won the Inland Empire Blues Society best new blues band award 2 years ago. In addition to all of this, my son Nicholas is a fine acoustic blues singer and player. He performs in coffee houses and at blues festivals around the area, as well."
